外国の望遠鏡で星を見よう（東北大学附属病院院内学級、西多賀養護学校高等部 ２００２）

東北大学附属病院院内学級および西多賀養護学校高等部で、アメリカのアリゾナ州にあるArnie Rosner Enterprisesが管理、運営しているインターネット望遠鏡システムを利用し、観望会を実施しました。

実践プログラム
  1. 星空の説明。
  2. A0パネルとスライドショーを用いた、インターネット望遠鏡システムについての説明。
  3. Yahoo! Messengerを用いたArnie Rosner 氏との会話。生徒が自己紹介と質問をする。
  4. 実際に望遠鏡を操作する。
  5. 得られた画像に関しての簡潔な説明。
  6. アンケートに記入をお願いする。(3,4では障害に応じて必要な配慮、援助をした.)
授業カリキュラム

星空の説明を聞く PCを用いて、星座、星雲や日周運動に言及しながら解説する｡
アリゾナの望遠鏡についての説明を聞く 「海外にある望遠鏡を、目の前にあるパソコンを用い、インターネット経由で遠隔操作すること」を伝え、 A0サイズパネル とpower pointスライドショーを用いてアリゾナの場所、現地の様子、現地と日本との時差(16時間)、 望遠鏡の設置状況について詳しく説明する｡
望遠鏡のオーナーであるArnie Rosner 氏との会話を聞く
可能であれば会話をする		 Yahoo!Messenger を用いた授業者とArnie氏とのやりとりを、随時翻訳しながらみせる。
可能であれば、生徒に自己紹介や質問をしてもらう。質問するときは、生徒に配付した質問リストを参考にしながら英語で質問してもらう。 その際、障害に応じて必要な補助をする。
実際に望遠鏡を操作する 生徒に配付した用紙中の天体の中から観察したいものを自由に選んでもらう。
望遠鏡の操作は、望遠鏡操作用webページを簡潔にまとめたA0サイズパネルを参照しながら説明する。その後、実際に操作してもらう。
必要に応じて、文字入力にソフトキーボードを用いるなどの配慮をする。
得られた画像についての説明を聞く 得られた画像について、簡単な解説をする。天体の形やスケール、天体誕生のいきさつについて話す。
アンケートに意見・感想を記入する 準備したアンケート用紙に記入してもらう。

Yahoo! Messengerによって映像と音声の相互の通信が可能。これを用いて，望遠鏡操作についてのサポートを社長のArnie Rosner氏が一晩中行なっている。
考察

観望会後のアンケートより、全員から「自分で望遠鏡を操作し、星雲や星団を見た実感があった！」「また利用してみたい」 と回答があり、インターネット望遠鏡は、病弱・肢体不自由の生徒の天体観察手段としても非常に有効であると考えられます。一方で、「操作が少し難しい」「星座や惑星が観たい」という声もあり、こういったニーズにこたえ、授業時間外でも子ども・生徒が簡単に利用可能にするためには、ウェブサイトの日本語化 や、広角望遠鏡、惑星用フィルタの導入、そして、学習活動内容のさらなる改善が必要です。

A star watching class was held at Tohoku University Special School in Hospital and Nishitaga Special High school using Internet Telescope administrated by Arnie Rosner Enterprises in Arizona, USA.
The feature of the Arnie Rosner Enterprises Internet Telescope
  • Time difference can be used. It enables star watching in the daytime in Japan.
  • The telescope can be easily operated by a browser and a mouse.
  • Accuracy of observation and image quality are high.

Program
  1. Explain the night sky.
  2. Explain the system of the internet telescope with A0 panel and slide show.
  3. Chat with Mr. Rosner by Yahoo! messenger. Students introduce themselves and make questions.
  4. Operate the telescope.
  5. Explain the captured images simply.
  6. Hand out the questionnaires.　　(Special care or support were provided according to individual need.)
Teaching Plan
Students Teacher
Listen to the explanation of the night sky that they are going to watch. Explain the night sky noting constellations, nebulosities and diurnal motion.
Listen to the explanation of the internet telescope in Arizona. Tell them that we are going to remotely operate a overseas telescope through internet by PC in front of them. Explain in some detail about a location, appearances, the time difference (16hours) and the position of the telescope in Arizona with a A0 panel and power point slide show.
Listen to the conversation with Arnie Rosner who owns the telescope, or chat with him if they can.
 Show and translate the dialogue between a teacher and Mr. Rosner using Yahoo!Messenger. If possible, have students introduce themselves or question in English with a question list. Support when they need.
Operate the telescope. Make students freely pick up objects they want to watch from the handout
Explain how to operate the telescope with the A0 panel. After that, make students operate it. Prepare a soft keyboard for some students.
Listen to the explanation about the captured images. Explain the captured images simply. Tell the shapes, sizes and histories of them.
Write comments in the questionnaires. Hand out the questionnaires.

Yahoo! Messenger enables communication by both video and voice. Mr Rosner provides nightlong support to users of the telescope with it.
Discussion

All the students said "I actually felt that I operated the telescope to watch the nebulosity and the star cluster!" and "I want to use it again." in the questionnaires. An internet telescope is very effective in observing stars for handicapped children. On the other hand, some said "Operating was hard." or "I want to constellations or planets". The web site written in Japanese, a wide angle telescope, a filter for planets and upgrade of teaching plan are needed to meet such needs.
